CHARACTER NAME: Tom Marvolo Riddle
SERIES: Harry Potter
CANON POINT: Tom has bought his school supplies but hasn't made it onto the Hogwarts Express yet.
LOSS: Tom will be losing Parseltongue - the ability to communicate with snakes. This is something he holds dear as it sets him apart from the other children. It makes him special and unique. Losing it will be difficult as it is a large part of who he is.
ABOUT THE CHARACTER:
Lord Voldemort was born Tom Marvolo Riddle on 31st December 1926. His mother died moments after his birth and he was raised in a Muggle Orphanage unaware of his magical heritage. During his eleven years there, he realised how special he was. He could make the other children do things, or more accurately, do things to them. He stole things from the other children and kept them as trophies, using his ability to talk to snakes to his advantage as well as his charisma which helped him to manipulate those around him.
Then one day, not long after his eleventh birthday, a man named Professor Albus Dumbledore came to visit him. He told him, and showed him, he was a wizard and he wouldn’t have to live in the orphanage any more. Tom jumped at the chance to leave; doing everything he was asked until he was on that train. This included apologising for the bad things he had done to the other children and giving back the trophies he had kept.
It was a few months after that meeting with Professor Dumbledore that Tom first went to Diagon Alley for his school supplies. He was awed but the sheer knowledge and speciality this new world contained but he never lost the cruel streak inside of him. This was very evident when he was extremely pleased at how powerful his wand would be.
Tom is a very sadistic and vindictive child. He takes pleasure in the suffering of others, especially those who cross him, and enjoys taking something from them to remember it by. These trophies he values more than people because he believes he is better than everyone else.
He was very manipulative, especially in his childhood and Hogwarts days. He used it to his advantage, coupling it together with his polite charm and brilliant intelligence to gain the favour of every teacher in Hogwarts, except Albus Dumbledore, the set of friends who eventually became his Death Eaters, and later in life as he served in Borkin and Burkes.
During his time at the orphanage, he grew more and more independent, claiming he walked the streets of London alone many times. He tells Dumbledore in that first meeting how he doesn’t need anyone else and this is a trait which only develops over time. This is also present when he shows his contempt for the connection he has to others; like having the first name, Tom. Even has a child he wished to be different which is why he shed his name to become Lord Voldemort.
His arrogance is also a key trait which develops over time. His belief that he is better than everyone else because of the way he was raised. He never had parents to love him or take care of him and so had to do everything himself. He grew up learning independence and fighting his own battles. When he realised how he won those battles, he harnessed the power and used to hurt the people who were mean to him. He had more control over his powers than most wizards at that age and he had begun to use his powers consciously. This control over his power is what led him to believe he was better than everyone else and therefore the root of his arrogance.
ABILITIES: Tom has an unusually high mastery of magic powers despite the fact he didn't even know about his magic heritage until he was eleven years old. He used this to torment the children at the orphanage and make them fear him. He also has the power of parseltongue which meant he could talk to snakes. This was also used to torment his fellow orphans. And lastly at this age, he had charisma. Which is an ability in and of itself as he used it to charm and manipulate people throughout his childhood and school life.
THIRD-PERSON WRITING SAMPLE:
“Tell the truth.” Tom’s voice was full of authority and command but it was hidden by an act of well-practised fear. He glared at the girl with disgust but as soon as Mrs Cole looked upon him, his expression changed to one of sadness and anxiety.
He had been standing in Mrs Cole’s office for about ten minutes now. Only a few hours before did one of the new girls, Caitlyn Mack, tease him. But now Tom was getting his revenge. Just like with Billy Stubbs’s rabbit or with Dennis Bishop and Amy Benson in the cave, she would soon learn that he was better than her Then things would be back to normal and people would fear him, which was just the way he liked it.
He continued his sneak glares at Caitlyn thinking murderous thoughts as though thought alone would bring his will into reality. It wasn’t long before she broke down sobbing and confessed to bullying him. This was the way it was supposed to be. Anyone who crossed his path was immediately dealt with. That was how it started. With the arrogance to believe they were better than him. The arrogance to believe they were even equal to him! But he always showed them. He’d teach them the right way to behave; he’d teach them to fear him. The fear which would give way to respect; and respect gave you power. The power which he held over them because of this wonderful ability bestowed only to him.
Tom was escorted back to his room by Mrs Cole who assured him that Caitlyn would be dealt with accordingly. Once the door closed, Tom smirked. He’d collect his trophy tomorrow and he’d sleep tonight.
FIRST-PERSON JOURNAL SAMPLE:
[Text]
After the Professor had left, I was quivering with excitement in my room. I finally knew why I was so different, so special. It was wonderful to understand.
I stood there for several moments before the cardboard box on my bed rattled again and I opened it. Looking inside I saw the many items I had collected. I looked at them longingly. These were my treasures from all my successful attempts at revenge. I didn’t want to give them back.
But I realised they were a small price to pay to get out of the orphanage to learn magic. So I did as I had been instructed. I gave them all back and apologised. I was glad the kids still looked scared of me even as I was doing something they would consider nice. They should be scared. I’m better than them. I’m a wizard.
INTENT: I enjoy playing Tom because he's very different to my other characters. And I prefer Tom being younger as he's less dominated by the plot in later life. He's simpler but still very complicated and I love the idea of him losing Parseltongue which Paradisa alone gives me the chance to.
